Welcome to therapy (and to our first blog post)

Thank you for being here! We are so excited to announce our very first blog post: Welcome to therapy. Through this post, we are hoping to discuss some of the most common FAQ about therapy. Whether you are just starting out on your first therapy journey, resuming a journey you have put on pause, or looking for a fresh restart - we hope you find this post helpful!

So, what is psychotherapy? In theory, psychotherapy (aka talk therapy) is a form of treatment aimed to help individuals understand and manage their mental health and emotional challenges. The goal is often to offer support in addressing specific issues, such as, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, etc. In Mindful With You terms, psychotherapy is also healing, collaborative teamwork, building a strong therapeutic relationship, empowering, nurturing, growing.


How do I know if a therapist is the right fit? Finding the right therapist is one of the most important components for effective therapy. Things to keep in mind when searching for a therapist: comfort and trust, good communication, empathy and respect, professionalism, specialization and experience, collaborative approach, positive progress, feedback and adaptability. Mindful With You offers free 15-minute phone consultations to give you a chance to get to know your therapist before beginning your therapy journey!

What happens in a typical therapy session? Growth! Every session is different and unique to the individual, however, most sessions involve discussing your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Sessions are meant to be a safe space for you. Coping strategies and helpful tools are also often provided in session.


Is psychotherapy confidential? Yes. Psychotherapists are bound by confidentiality laws and ethical guidelines. However, there are exceptions (such as risk to harm oneself or others) all of which you will be made aware of before you start your therapy journey.


Is psychotherapy covered by insurance? Many insurance plans cover psychotherapy! It is important to check in with your insurance provider about what is covered.
